Another “Shade of Hay” in the Iowa Oaks

Posted by Brian Appleton on June 28, 2013

Fiftyshadesofhay.Black Eyed Susan04.5-17-13.BL_ Fiftyshadesofhay heads a good field of 9 other 3-year-old fillies in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks this Saturday at Prairie Meadows. The Bob Baffert trained filly finished third to behind Beholder in the Santa Anita Oaks (Gr.1) one month after finishing 3 ¾ lengths behind Beholder in the Las Virgenes Stakes (Gr.1) earlier this year, but her connections maintained faith that she could win a breakout race against her division. They skipped the Kentucky Oaks in favor of the Black Eyed Susan Stakes (Gr.2) on Preakness Stakes weekend and were rewarded when Fiftyshadesofhay stole the show with a thrilling neck victory over Marathon Lady. She has turned in four strong works in preparation for the Iowa Oaks at Santa Anita and will be installed as the morning line favorite. Her chances here look very good and she seems like she could be one of those fillies who improves with time and age.

Seaneen Girl won the Golden Rod Stakes (Gr.2) last November, but has missed the target in four tries since. She finished second in an allowance race two runs back at Churchill Downs, but honestly doesn’t seem as sharp as some of the other fillies in this race. It will take a big improvement for her to win.

So Many Ways was the talk of Saratoga last year after winning her maiden by 8 lengths and capturing the Schuylerville Stakes (Gr.3) by 1 ½ lengths and the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes by 2 ½ lengths. She began 2013 with a 3rd place run in the Primal Force Stakes at Gulfstream Park after a poor start and followed that up with a 5th place finish in the Fair Grounds Oaks (Gr.2). She returned to her winning ways at Churchill Downs on May 3rd, winning the Eight Belles Stakes (Gr.3) by a half-length over a large field. I think this Maggie Moss owned filly might like shorter distances than the 1 1/16 miles of the Iowa Oaks, but she’s also classy and could easily take a piece of the action on Saturday.

Hitechnoweenie is the only other filly in the field that has a stakes win to her record, a three length win in the Panthers Stakes at Prairie Meadows on June 1. She previously scored a 5 ¼ length romp in a 1 1/16 mile allowance race at Churchill Downs. This Kenny McPeek trainee looks like the most logical choice to pick up the pieces if the favorites fail to fire their best shot.

The remainder of the field looks far outclassed to me, but this is horse racing and it seems like this sport more than any other gives rise to long-shot winners all the time. Fiftyshadesofhay and So Many Ways are the ones I’ll be watching and expecting the more out of in the Iowa Oaks, especially Fiftyshadesofhay.
I was really hoping to write about Aubby K running in the $150,000 Chicago Handicap this weekend as well, but suffice it to say I think she’s won two races in-a-row at the 7 furlong distance and this looks right up her alley. I’ll be looking for her to make it 3-in-a-row.
